Hey, you! Want to download any kind of thing from any kind of place and work with it on your computer? You need a zip file! Now it’s time to unzip it…

In Windows 10 out of the box, the process is a confusing mess.

  1. Double click the zip file in explorer.
  2. Open the windows explorer ribbon section for compressed tool.
  3. Click Extract all
  4. Enter a location that is something like the name of the archive as a new folder inside the current folder.
  5. Click Extract
  6. Go back to the folder where the zip file is
  7. Delete the zip file
Ew.

This is a process repeated 100x a day for me. Further, what I need to do with a zip file doesn’t deviate from this process 99.9999% of the time. So why can’t it be easier?

It can!

Download a utility called ExtractNow and configure it properly and you can do all of this in one step.

There it is. Go to here and get the thing and then I will show you how to configure it: https://www.extractnow.com/#/home. Mercifully, it downloads as an .exe file, not a .zip file. Never again.

Configure ExtractNow

If you installed it and, it looks like this, good job!

Click on that settings gear, ya goof. You knew where we were going.

Make yours look like mine. Basically we are selecting options for what to do when a .zip file is opened:

We’re going to allow multiple instances under the General tab for real ultimate maximum unzipping power
